The Danube in Đerdap National Park at the Iron Gates

Region

Timok Valley

Zaječar sits at the centre; everything else is driving distance. This overview says how far – and whether it is worth it.

The Timok Valley is the stretch of country between the Bulgarian border to the east, the Danube to the north and the Carpathian foothills to the west. Zaječar is its administrative centre; besides the city, the district covers the municipalities of Boljevac, Knjaževac and Sokobanja and counted around 96,700 inhabitants in 2022. Travelling here means thinking in driving minutes, not city districts.
