Getting to Zaječar
Zaječar sits off the main routes – but the distances are manageable once you are inside Serbia.
Zaječar lies in eastern Serbia near the Bulgarian border, around 245 road kilometres from Belgrade. There is no local airport and no reliable passenger rail service. The realistic options are: fly to Niš or Belgrade and continue by hire car or long-distance bus, or drive the whole way yourself.
By air
Three airports come into question. Niš is the closest, Belgrade has the most connections, Sofia is often the cheapest – at the cost of a border crossing.

By car
Zaječar sits on the European routes E761 and E771. The main axes are Paraćin–Zaječar–Bulgaria, Paraćin–Zaječar–Negotin–Kladovo–Romania and Negotin–Zaječar–Knjaževac–Niš. Coming from central Europe, the usual route runs via Hungary and Belgrade, turning east at Paraćin.
Carry a green insurance card; a high-visibility vest and warning triangle are compulsory. The main roads are in good condition, some of the minor roads in the Timok Valley are not. Allow extra time for the cellar villages and for Zlot.
By long-distance bus
In Serbia the coach network, not the railway, is the backbone of public transport. Zaječar is connected to Belgrade, Niš and Negotin; tickets are sold at the bus station counter or directly by the driver. The network does not, however, cover the excursion destinations: Rajac, Lazar's Cave and Đerdap National Park are only reachable without a car at considerable effort.
Border crossings
The Vrška Čuka crossing east of Zaječar leads into Bulgaria, towards Vidin and Sofia. For Romania, the route runs via Kladovo and the Đerdap dam bridge. EU citizens need only an identity card; waiting times at the crossings vary considerably in holiday season.
