Kraljevica Hill
400 hectares of park forest south of town – recreation area, sports hub and festival ground in one.
Kraljevica is a hill with a memorial park forest south of the centre, covering roughly 400 hectares. Conifers and evergreens dominate the terrain; for Zaječar it is both a local recreation area and a historic site.
The sports complex takes in around 55,000 square metres of active surface, with a sports hall, a swimming pool, a football stadium and hard courts. There is also a fairground, a hippodrome, a fitness trail and a ski slope, a mountain lodge and a riding club.
Historic markers include the monument to Ljuba Didić, a hero of the Timok Uprising, a gallows memorial to those killed here in the Second World War, the so-called Roman or Turkish steps, two fortress remnants from the First Serbian Uprising and a cross for the victims after 1945.
Culturally, Kraljevica is the town's stage: it hosts the Zaječar Gitarijada, a motorcycle rally and the electronic music festival ZALET. Since 1997 the Faculty of Management, the first private faculty in eastern Serbia, has stood on the summit.
Practical notes
- A good half-hour walk from the centre, with a moderate climb.
- The hill is packed during the Gitarijada – come outside the festival days if you want quiet.
